Thank you so much for supporting the Make Your Mark Foundation, and Dr Laurence Cheung’s Cure Cancer-funded research by purchasing a Make Your Mark Phone Case. Because of you, Dr Cheung has been able to receive crucial support to investigate better treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), the most common form of blood cancer in children.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update on some of the recent developments Dr Cheung has achieved with his research.  

Dr Cheung’s research has been focused on one novel strategy: targeting cells surrounding the leukaemia cells. 

I believe my research has the potential to reduce the impact of cancer and lessen the short- and long-term side effects of traditional treatments for all children diagnosed with ALL.

Over the past 3 months, Laurence has achieved some outstanding progress which we are thrilled to share with you here: 

·   Dr Laurence’s greatest achievement so far is the establishment of a scientific model which replicates the presentation of bone loss in children with ALL at diagnosis.  The model provides a way of understanding how all the different types of cells in the bone marrow communicate during leukaemia development. Using this model, Laurence and his team identified the process of bone loss in children with ALL.

·   Laurence and his team have also recently completed a proof-of-concept study and demonstrated that targeting the leukaemia microenvironment not only stops the bone loss, but also reduces leukaemia progression. This is an incredibly exciting finding.

·   Laurence is currently studying the interactions between the leukaemic cells and the bone cells.  The findings will allow Laurence to take his research from bench-to-bedside.
